Main Idea and Theme — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
For CSAT main idea questions, develop a systematic three-step approach: Preview-Analyze-Eliminate. During preview, spend 30 seconds scanning the passage for structural clues - look for transition words like 'however,' 'therefore,' 'most importantly' that signal key ideas.
Pay special attention to first and last sentences of paragraphs, as these often contain topic sentences or conclusions. In the analysis phase, distinguish between what the passage says (explicit content) and what it means (implicit message).
Practice the 'umbrella test' - the correct main idea should be broad enough to cover all major points discussed but specific enough to exclude irrelevant information. For elimination, immediately remove options that are too narrow (supporting details), too broad (beyond passage scope), or contradictory to the passage tone.
Memorize common trap patterns: supporting details disguised as main ideas, overly specific examples, and opposite viewpoints. Use the 'keyword matching' technique cautiously - correct answers often paraphrase rather than directly repeat passage language.
For time management, allocate 2-3 minutes per passage regardless of length, spending equal time on reading and question-solving. Practice with passages from diverse domains - governance, economics, environment, technology - as CSAT draws from varied sources.
Develop pattern recognition for different passage structures: problem-solution, cause-effect, compare-contrast, and chronological, as each reveals main ideas differently.
