Assumption Questions — UPSC Importance
UPSC Importance Analysis
Assumption practice develops the ability to find what a recommendation or causal claim leaves unstated. It is particularly useful when an option is plausible but stronger than the argument needs. The learning objective is to distinguish a required bridge from a helpful extra consideration, not to endorse a policy merely because its goal is attractive.
Work through arguments involving service access, sample-based conclusions and proposed replacements. These contexts expose different kinds of missing links: usability, representativeness and the adequacy of a substitute. They also make it possible to create clear counterexamples without relying on specialist subject knowledge.
An error log should identify whether the mistake was an incorrect negation, confusion between necessary and sufficient conditions, or selection of a fact already stated in the passage. Review explanations matter as much as answer totals. A useful answer states exactly why denying the chosen proposition damages the given reasoning. No claim is made here that a particular assumption type has a fixed frequency or guaranteed place in a future examination.
