Coherence and Flow — Mains Strategy
Mains Strategy
While 'Coherence and Flow' is a direct topic for CSAT, its mastery is profoundly impactful for UPSC Mains, particularly in General Studies and Essay papers. The strategy here shifts from identifying coherence to *producing* it.
Firstly, structure is paramount. For every answer, create a clear mental or written outline: Introduction, Body Paragraphs (each with a distinct point), and Conclusion. This ensures logical progression.
Secondly, use topic sentences effectively. Each paragraph should begin with a sentence that clearly states its main idea, acting as a mini-thesis for that paragraph. Thirdly, employ transition words and phrases judiciously between sentences and, crucially, between paragraphs.
Words like 'furthermore', 'however', 'consequently', 'in addition', 'on the other hand' act as signposts, guiding the examiner through your argument and demonstrating sophisticated analytical thought.
Fourthly, maintain thematic unity within each paragraph; every sentence must contribute to the topic sentence. Avoid introducing extraneous information. Fifthly, ensure a logical flow of arguments across the entire answer.
The conclusion should naturally follow from the body, and the body paragraphs should build upon each other in a coherent sequence. Finally, practice writing under timed conditions, focusing on clarity and conciseness.
A well-structured, coherent, and flowing answer not only earns higher marks for presentation but also enhances the perceived quality of your content, reflecting the administrative acumen expected of a civil servant.
