Contextual Clues — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
For the UPSC CSAT Prelims, a targeted strategy for contextual clues is essential to maximize scores in the verbal ability section. Begin by understanding the six major types of clues – definition, synonym, antonym, example, inference, and mood/tone – and their associated signal words.
Practice actively identifying these clues in diverse reading materials, focusing on articles from The Hindu, Indian Express, and government reports, which mirror CSAT's thematic content. When encountering an unknown word in a passage, resist the urge to panic.
Instead, immediately apply the 'VYYUHA CONTEXT Framework': C-Check signal words, O-Observe sentence structure, N-Note surrounding ideas, T-Test logical flow, E-Eliminate wrong options, X-eXamine final choice, T-Time check (under 90 seconds).
Prioritize reading the sentence containing the unknown word, then the immediate preceding and succeeding sentences. Mentally substitute each option to see which one maintains the logical and grammatical coherence of the passage.
For inference-based questions, which are increasingly common, focus on the overall theme and argument of the paragraph. Regularly solve previous year CSAT questions, analyzing the explanations to understand how clues were used to arrive at the correct answer.
This systematic practice will not only improve your accuracy but also significantly reduce the time spent per question, a crucial aspect of CSAT time management techniques.
