Logical Sequence — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
To ace Logical Sequence questions in CSAT, a systematic and multi-layered approach is essential. Vyyuha's strategy emphasizes speed with accuracy. First, always begin by scanning the sentences for potential opening statements.
These are typically general introductions, definitions, or independent facts that don't refer to previous information. Next, identify 'mandatory pairs' – sentences that are inextricably linked. Look for pronoun-antecedent relationships (e.
g., 'he' referring to 'John'), cause-effect pairs (e.g., 'problem' followed by 'solution'), or transitional markers ('therefore', 'however', 'consequently') that create a strong bond. Once you have identified a few such pairs or a definite opener/closer, immediately turn to the options.
Use the elimination technique rigorously: if an option breaks a mandatory pair or starts with an inappropriate sentence, discard it. This significantly narrows down the choices. Finally, read the chosen sequence to ensure it flows logically and makes complete sense.
Practice recognizing different logical patterns – cause-effect, problem-solution, general-specific, premise-conclusion – as the UPSC is increasingly testing these nuanced relationships. Time-saving techniques include focusing on the first and last sentences of the options and working backward.
Remember, consistent practice with a timer is key to developing both speed and accuracy.
