Explicit Assumptions — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
Explicit assumption questions require systematic pattern recognition and disciplined analytical approach rather than intuitive reasoning. Focus preparation on identifying trigger words (because, since, if, all, some) that signal assumption-bearing statement structures.
Develop automatic recognition of five common patterns: cause-and-effect relationships, conditional statements, comparative assertions, categorical claims, and temporal sequences. Practice the CLEAR framework (Check statement structure, Look for direct relationships, Evaluate options systematically, Assume minimally, Reason logically) until it becomes automatic.
Memorize the necessity test: if removing the assumption breaks the logical connection, it's likely correct. Use elimination strategies to quickly discard options requiring external knowledge, complex inference, or representing conclusions rather than premises.
Time management should target 45-60 seconds per question through pattern recognition and systematic elimination. Avoid common traps including confusing explicit with implicit assumptions, selecting conclusions instead of premises, and overthinking simple relationships.
Regular practice with timed exercises builds speed while maintaining accuracy. Focus on recent CSAT papers (2019-2024) to understand current complexity levels and question formats.
