Statement and Assumptions — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
For UPSC CSAT Prelims, a structured and disciplined approach to 'Statement and Assumptions' is paramount. Vyyuha recommends starting with a thorough understanding of the core concept: an assumption is an unstated premise *necessary* for the statement to hold true.
The cornerstone of our strategy is the Negation Test. For every option, mentally negate it and ask: 'Does this negated option make the original statement illogical, irrelevant, or invalid?' If the answer is yes, then the original assumption is valid.
This technique helps cut through ambiguity and subjective interpretations. Secondly, read the statement meticulously. Identify the subject, the action, and the implied purpose. What is the speaker trying to achieve or convey?
This helps in narrowing down the scope of potential assumptions. Thirdly, eliminate extraneous information. Many trap options introduce new information or make claims that are plausible but not *necessary* for the statement.
Stick strictly to what the statement implies. Fourthly, distinguish assumptions from inferences. An assumption is a *pre-condition*, while an inference is a *post-conclusion*. Do not confuse what *must be true* for the statement to be made with what *can be concluded* from it.
Finally, time management is crucial. While these questions can be tricky, with practice, the negation test becomes intuitive. Allocate approximately 1-1.5 minutes per question. If an option feels too broad, too specific, or introduces external knowledge, it's likely a trap.
Consistent practice with previous year questions and mock tests, applying the Vyyuha 'ASSUME' mnemonic, will solidify your understanding and boost your confidence.
