For Direction and Distance problems in UPSC Prelims, focus on systematic approaches rather than mental visualization. Memorize the coordinate system setup: origin at starting point, North as +Y axis, East as +X axis.

Practice automatic recognition of the eight primary directions and their angular relationships. For shadow problems, memorize the sun-shadow relationship: morning shadows point West, noon shadows point North, evening shadows point East.

Develop quick calculation skills for the Pythagorean theorem and basic trigonometry for intermediate directions (cos 45° = sin 45° = 0.707). Common elimination techniques include: ruling out total distance when asked for shortest distance, eliminating options that ignore coordinate geometry, and identifying impossible directions based on given constraints.

Create a mental checklist: read problem twice, identify question type, set up coordinate system, track movements systematically, apply appropriate formula, and verify answer logic. Practice time management by allocating maximum 2 minutes per problem, with complex multi-step problems getting 3 minutes.

Avoid common traps like confusing relative and absolute directions, mixing displacement with distance, and making calculation errors under pressure.
