Prelims Strategy

Write a, d and the requested quantity before calculating. If two nonconsecutive terms are supplied, divide their value difference by their position difference. For an nth-term question, count n − 1 steps; for a total, use the endpoint average multiplied by the number of terms.

Use quick checks: an increasing AP's total lies between n times its first and last terms; its average is their midpoint. A proposed member must produce an integer position within the allowed range. When counting multiples, identify permitted endpoints before using the inclusive count formula. A negative common difference should remain negative throughout the calculation.

Avoid applying AP formulas to compound percentage growth or to cumulative totals simply because the underlying deposits increase regularly. In timed practice, estimate the answer's scale before inspecting nearby options. After an error, reconstruct the term list for a small version of the problem. That reveals indexing and endpoint mistakes more clearly than repeating the same algebra without checking what each symbol represents.
