Letter Analogies — Mains Strategy
Mains Strategy
Letter analogies do not appear in UPSC Mains examinations as they are exclusively a CSAT Paper-II question type. However, the analytical thinking skills developed through letter analogy practice provide valuable benefits for Mains answer writing.
The systematic pattern recognition approach transfers to analyzing policy frameworks, identifying cause-effect relationships in governance issues, and structuring logical arguments in essay writing. The ALPS method (Analyze-Locate-Pattern-Solve) can be adapted for Mains answer structure: Analyze the question requirements, Locate key concepts and connections, identify the Pattern of expected response, and Solve through systematic presentation.
While direct application is limited, the logical reasoning skills enhanced through letter analogy practice contribute to clearer thinking and more structured responses across all Mains papers.
