Odd One Out — Revision Notes
⚡ 30-Second Revision
- State one common property.
- Apply it to every entry.
- Keep semantic level and counting convention fixed.
- Check for a second natural classification.
- An ambiguous list needs a condition, not a forced answer.
2-Minute Revision
Odd-one-out questions require a grouping rule, not merely a distinctive observation. Use the criterion specified in the prompt and verify that the other entries actually share it. When no criterion is stated, compare the simplicity and relevance of plausible rules. A short list may support more than one answer, so explain ambiguity in practice material. A good final sentence names the excluded item and the property that the remaining items satisfy.
5-Minute Revision
Classify 8, 27, 64 and 81 under the instruction 'identify the number that is not a perfect cube'. The first three equal 2³, 3³ and 4³; 81 is excluded. Now remove the instruction. Under parity, 8 and 64 are even while 27 and 81 are odd, so parity does not produce a three-to-one grouping. Under perfect-square status, 64 and 81 form another pair. Explain why a property must actually fit the requested grouping rather than merely distinguish some items.

Rule → Test each → Check rivals → Explain. Classification needs a consistent criterion.
