BODMAS Rule — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
For UPSC CSAT BODMAS questions, develop a systematic three-step approach: Recognition, Application, and Verification. First, quickly scan the expression to identify all operation types and bracket levels - this takes 5-10 seconds but prevents costly errors.
Second, apply BODMAS methodically using the Vyyuha Pyramid Strategy: visualize the expression as a hierarchy with brackets at the top, then orders, then division/multiplication, finally addition/subtraction.
Practice mental calculation shortcuts for common operations: memorize squares up to 25², percentage-fraction conversions (25% = 1/4, 33.33% = 1/3, etc.), and basic division patterns. For complex expressions, use approximation when exact calculation isn't required - UPSC often designs questions where rough calculation suffices for option elimination.
Develop pattern recognition for frequently tested combinations: percentage of bracketed expressions, fraction operations with mixed numbers, and nested bracket structures. Time management is crucial - allocate maximum 60 seconds per BODMAS question, with 45 seconds as the target.
If a question exceeds this timeframe, mark for review and move forward. Common elimination techniques include checking if options are reasonable given the expression magnitude, identifying obviously wrong answers through quick approximation, and recognizing trap options that result from common errors.
Practice with progressively complex expressions daily, starting with 2-operation problems and advancing to 5-6 operation combinations. Memorize the BODMAS sequence using multiple mnemonics to ensure recall under pressure.
