Percentages are a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100. Think of it like this: if you have a cake cut into 100 equal slices, and you eat 10 slices, you've eaten 10 percent (10%) of the cake. The word 'percent' literally means 'per hundred' or 'out of every hundred'. It's a universal language for comparing parts of a whole, making it incredibly useful in many situations, from calculating discounts in a shop to understanding economic growth rates.

To convert a fraction to a percentage, you simply multiply the fraction by 100. For example, if you scored 18 out of 20 on a test, your score as a fraction is 18/20. To find the percentage, you calculate (18/20) * 100 = 90%. This means you scored 90 out of every 100 marks possible.

Similarly, converting a decimal to a percentage is straightforward: just multiply the decimal by 100. If a survey shows that 0.75 of the population prefers a certain product, this means 0.75 * 100 = 75% of the population.

Conversely, to convert a percentage back to a fraction or decimal, you divide by 100. So, 30% is 30/100 (which simplifies to 3/10) or 0.30. This interconversion is a fundamental skill for solving percentage problems.

Percentages are particularly powerful because they standardize comparisons. Whether you're comparing a small quantity to a small total or a large quantity to a large total, expressing both as a percentage of 100 allows for an 'apples-to-apples' comparison.

For instance, knowing that one company's profit increased by 10% and another's by 15% tells you more about their relative performance than just knowing their absolute profit figures, especially if their base profits were vastly different.

This concept is foundational for understanding many quantitative aptitude topics, including arithmetic fundamentals and ratio and proportion concepts. Mastering these basic conversions and the underlying idea of 'parts per hundred' is the first crucial step towards excelling in percentage-based problems in exams like UPSC CSAT.
