For CSAT Prelims, the strategy for percentages must be geared towards speed and accuracy. First, memorize common fraction-to-percentage conversions (e.g., 1/8 = 12.5%, 1/6 = 16.67%). This is non-negotiable for quick calculations.

Second, master the multiplier method for percentage increase/decrease (e.g., 20% increase means multiplying by 1.20). This avoids multi-step calculations. Third, practice the effective percentage change formula (a+b+ab/100) for successive changes, remembering to use negative signs for decreases.

Fourth, focus heavily on Data Interpretation (DI) problems involving percentages. These often come in sets, making them high-reward. Learn to quickly extract relevant data and perform comparative percentage calculations.

Fifth, develop strong approximation skills. If the options are widely spaced, estimate rather than calculate precisely. Sixth, identify the correct base value for every percentage calculation; this is a common trap.

Finally, practice mixed problem sets under timed conditions to build endurance and identify your weak areas. Regular revision of formulas and shortcuts will ensure they are readily accessible during the exam.
