Alligation — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
For UPSC CSAT prelims, focus on mastering the alligation cross technique for quick ratio determination. Memorize the visual setup: mixture rate in center, individual rates at corners, diagonal differences give the ratio.
Practice mental calculation of simple differences to save time. Recognize standard patterns like equal-difference problems (resulting in 1:1 ratios) and percentage-based mixture problems. Develop shortcuts for common scenarios: when mixture rate is exactly halfway between individual rates, the ratio is always 1:1.
Practice transitioning between alligation and weighted average methods based on given information. Focus on accuracy over speed initially, then build speed through repeated practice. Common elimination techniques include checking if calculated ratios produce the given mixture rate through weighted average verification.
Pay special attention to percentage problems where rates represent concentrations rather than prices. Practice with integrated problems combining alligation with profit-loss, time-work, or data interpretation contexts.
