Work Efficiency — Definition

Definition

Work-efficiency problems compare how much of a defined job people or machines complete per unit of time. Efficiency is a rate, while completion time is the duration required at that rate. For the same job under constant conditions, a higher rate means a shorter time, so the two quantities vary inversely.

Combined work rates can be added when workers contribute independently to the same task. Questions involving changing teams, leaks, interruptions or unequal working hours require separate time intervals.

The central method is to choose a consistent work unit and account for completed work as rate multiplied by time.
