Time and Work — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
For UPSC CSAT Time and Work problems, adopt a systematic three-phase approach: Recognition, Calculation, and Verification. In the Recognition phase, quickly identify the problem type—individual work, combined work, pipe-cistern, or work-wages.
Look for keywords like 'together,' 'alone,' 'fills,' 'empties,' 'efficiency,' and 'wages' to categorize the problem correctly. Master the fundamental formulas: Work = Rate × Time, Combined Rate = Sum of individual rates, and Efficiency ∝ 1/Time.
In the Calculation phase, use the LCM method for fraction operations to avoid decimal complications and speed up calculations. For combined work problems, always convert individual times to rates (1/time), add the rates, then find the reciprocal for combined time.
For pipe-cistern problems, remember that inlet rates are positive and outlet rates are negative. In efficiency problems, establish that if A takes 'a' days and B takes 'b' days, their efficiency ratio is b:a.
Memorize common LCMs (12, 15, 18, 20, 24, 30, 36) to speed up calculations. Practice the elimination technique: if a problem seems complex, check if any answer choice can be eliminated based on logical reasoning.
For instance, in combined work problems, the combined time must be less than the individual times. In the Verification phase, quickly check if your answer makes logical sense. Use approximation for complex calculations—if exact calculation is time-consuming, estimate and match with the closest option.
Develop shortcuts like recognizing that when two workers with times 'a' and 'b' work together, combined time = (a×b)/(a+b). Practice identifying trap answers: options that represent individual times, arithmetic means, or results from common calculation errors.
Time management is crucial—allocate maximum 2 minutes per Time and Work problem, and if a problem seems too complex, mark your best guess and move on to avoid negative marking.
