Definition

Relative speed is one of the most important concepts in time-speed-distance problems for UPSC CSAT. Think of it as the speed at which one moving object appears to be moving when observed from another moving object.

Imagine you're sitting in a train moving at 60 km/hr, and another train passes by you in the opposite direction at 40 km/hr. From your perspective, that train appears to be moving at 100 km/hr (60 + 40).

This is relative speed. The concept becomes crucial because it helps us solve complex problems by simplifying them. Instead of tracking two moving objects separately, we can consider one as stationary and focus on the relative motion of the other.

There are two main scenarios in relative speed problems. First, when objects move in the same direction: if a faster car at 80 km/hr overtakes a slower car at 60 km/hr, the relative speed is 20 km/hr (80 - 60).

The faster car appears to move at only 20 km/hr relative to the slower one. Second, when objects move in opposite directions: if two trains approach each other at 50 km/hr and 70 km/hr respectively, their relative speed is 120 km/hr (50 + 70).

They approach each other much faster than either individual speed. Understanding relative speed is essential for solving train crossing problems, where we need to calculate how long it takes for one train to completely cross another.

It's also vital for circular track problems, where objects move around a track and we need to find when they meet or when one overtakes the other. In boats and streams problems, relative speed helps us understand how the stream affects the boat's motion relative to the ground.

The beauty of relative speed lies in its ability to convert complex two-object problems into simple one-object problems. By choosing an appropriate reference frame, we can make calculations much easier and reduce the chances of errors.
