Relative Speed — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
Master the fundamental distinction between same-direction and opposite-direction motion scenarios, as this forms the basis for 80% of relative speed problems in UPSC CSAT. Develop instant recognition of problem types through keyword identification: 'overtaking,' 'crossing,' 'meeting,' and 'approaching' indicate specific relative speed applications.
Create a mental checklist for problem-solving: identify motion directions, determine relevant speeds, apply appropriate formula, and verify using logical reasoning. Focus on unit conversion accuracy, as most errors occur when mixing km/hr and m/s in calculations.
Practice the 30-second rule: spend the first 30 seconds clearly understanding the problem setup before attempting calculations. Memorize key conversion factors (km/hr to m/s: multiply by 5/18) and common speed values for quick mental calculations.
Develop elimination techniques for MCQs: use dimensional analysis to eliminate obviously incorrect options, and apply logical bounds to narrow choices. For train crossing problems, always remember that crossing distance equals the sum of train lengths.
In circular track problems, recognize that meeting frequency depends on relative speed, not individual speeds. Practice backward calculation techniques: if given meeting time and speeds, work backward to find distances or verify problem consistency.
Build pattern recognition for complex problems that combine relative speed with other concepts like ratios, percentages, or work-time relationships.
