Simple Bar Charts — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
Read the axis unit and baseline before using the apparent height of a bar. Write the few required values in a labelled row. Identify the denominator explicitly for percentage comparisons, especially when the stem reverses “A compared with B” to “B compared with A”.
For totals, verify that categories are compatible and do not overlap. For averages, count all categories, including a missing value whose height must be inferred. If the question asks for a combined rate, return to the underlying numerator and denominator instead of averaging rates from unequal groups.
Use estimation to eliminate impossible options, then calculate precisely when choices are close. A common scale factor cancels in a ratio but must appear in an absolute difference. During review, classify mistakes as scale, category, operation, arithmetic or inference errors. Repeat the same numerical dataset with a different question to train operation selection; changing every number can conceal whether the underlying misunderstanding has actually been corrected.
