Multiple Bar Charts — Definition

Definition

A multiple-bar chart displays two or more data series as separate bars for the same categories. The legend identifies each series, and a common scale allows comparisons within a category or across categories.

Reading the chart requires attention to units, axis baselines and whether the bars show counts, rates or percentages. Absolute differences and percentage changes answer different questions because percentage comparisons depend on a denominator.

The chart can establish reported values and patterns, but it does not by itself explain the causes of those differences or justify comparisons between incompatible measures.
