Pie Charts — Prelims Strategy

Prelims Strategy

For every pie, write its total beside the chart before working with the sectors. Mark whether labels are degrees, percentages or amounts. Convert only the categories needed by the question, and keep the chart identity attached to each result.

When comparing two pies, calculate share × total for each category. Do not infer an amount increase from a share increase alone. For combined percentages, add category amounts and divide by combined totals; an unweighted average is valid only under the appropriate equal-weight conditions. Distinguish a five-percentage-point fall from a five percent relative fall.

Use angle anchors such as 90 degrees for one quarter to check the scale of a result. If totals are absent, test whether the requested comparison is still determined by within-chart ratios. Avoid estimating from decorative area when numerical labels exist. During review, rewrite the same problem with doubled totals and unchanged shares: the amounts should double while the percentages and within-chart ratios remain unchanged.
