Prelims Strategy

Before drawing, mark the reference words: north, facing, left, clockwise, origin and scale. Decide which are fixed to the page and which belong to a person or object. Set up a coordinate pair for location and a separate arrow for facing. Update these in the order given rather than jumping to the final picture.

Read the requested quantity before calculating. Distance travelled, direct separation, final direction and final facing are not interchangeable. For a route, signed components can cancel; travelled lengths cannot. For a rotation, keep the centre explicit and track a labelled point to check the direction. For a reflection, identify the coordinate or orientation that changes sign.

Use the options to diagnose a likely error only after building the model. A familiar number may correspond to a valid intermediate quantity rather than the answer. If a conclusion is said to be necessary, try an alternative configuration that still satisfies the clues. Do not add a standard-die rule, equal spacing or an implied movement unless it is stated. Record recurring errors by reference frame and operation, then practise those transitions.
