Figure Analogies — Revision Notes
⚡ 30-Second Revision
- Compare shape, position, orientation, shading and count.
- Transfer the rule, not the example’s endpoint.
- Clockwise quarter-turn: up → right → down → left.
- Position-only movement need not rotate the symbol.
- Symmetry can conceal an underdetermined transformation.
2-Minute Revision
A figure analogy maps a transformation from one pair to another. Record each feature that changes and each that stays fixed, then apply the full rule to the new input. Distinguish rotation from reflection and position from orientation. Verify compound rules component by component. If the example is too symmetric or sparse to identify a unique operation, seek an explicit condition or additional example rather than forcing an answer.
5-Minute Revision
A stated rule moves an object clockwise around four cells labelled top, right, bottom and left, while keeping its orientation fixed and reversing its shading. Apply it to a filled downward arrow in the bottom cell.
It moves to the left cell, still points downward and becomes outlined. Explain three nearby errors: putting it in the top cell makes a half-cycle move; pointing left rotates the arrow unnecessarily; keeping it filled misses the shading inversion.
Each option must be checked against the complete rule.
