Figure Series — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
Develop a systematic approach using the RAPS-SC framework (Rotation, Addition, Position, Size, Shading, Combination) for analyzing every figure series question. Memorize common rotation angles (45°, 90°, 135°, 180°) and practice quick recognition of clockwise vs.
counterclockwise movements. Focus on distinguishing rotation from reflection using the 'handedness' test - if rotating doesn't preserve asymmetric element orientation, reflection is involved. Practice elimination techniques by identifying obviously incorrect options first, particularly those that don't follow any logical pattern.
Build visual anchoring skills by identifying stable reference points within figures to track transformations more efficiently. Develop pattern hypothesis testing habits - always verify your identified pattern against all figures in the sequence before selecting an answer.
Practice time management with 1.5-2 minute allocation per question, spending 30-45 seconds on pattern identification and 45-60 seconds on analysis and selection. Create mental checklists for common trap patterns: accumulation vs.
transformation, simple vs. complex patterns, and single vs. multiple transformation rules. Regular practice with progressively complex patterns builds confidence and speed. Use mock tests to simulate exam pressure and refine timing strategies.
