Dice Problems — Definition

Definition

Dice problems use the faces of a cube either as spatial labels or as outcomes of a random experiment. In orientation questions, the important relationships are adjacency, opposition and the ordered positions of visible faces after rotations.

In probability questions, the important conditions are fairness, independence and the sample space. These models should not be mixed. A familiar gaming-die convention, such as opposite labels summing to seven, cannot be assumed for an arbitrary labelled cube unless the problem supplies it.

Start by deciding which kind of evidence the question gives and which conclusion it supports.
