Cube and Dice — Prelims Strategy

Classify the question before calculating: net folding, labelled-face orientation, painted-cube counting or probability. For a net, name the reference face and map all six positions. For a roll, write top, bottom, front, back, right and left before and after the movement. A rotation preserves opposite pairs, but matching opposite pairs alone does not prove that two fully labelled arrangements have the same orientation.
For painted cubes, identify how many divisions occur along each edge and which outer faces receive paint. Use the standard four-category formula only when every outer face is painted and the subdivisions are equal. Check that the category totals add to n³. If the wording says exactly two painted faces, exclude three-painted corners; at least two would include them.
Read the requested quantity carefully. A count is not a probability, and a probability requires an appropriate sample space. Do not assume opposite labels sum to seven or that all small cubes are equally likely to be selected unless the question provides those conditions. Eliminate options that violate a fixed adjacency before spending time on detailed orientation.
