Angle Between Hands — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
Focus on memorizing the core formula |30H - 5.5M| and practice rapid mental calculation of 5.5M values. Create a reference table for common times (every 15 minutes) and their corresponding angles for quick verification.
Master the coincidence pattern (11 times in 12 hours at intervals of 720/11 minutes) and right angle frequency (44 times in 12 hours). Practice elimination techniques: if options differ significantly, use approximation; if close values, calculate precisely.
Common traps include treating hour hand as stationary, confusing acute vs reflex angles, and miscounting periodic occurrences. Develop visual estimation skills - at 3:00 (90°), 6:00 (180°), 9:00 (90°) - to quickly eliminate wrong options.
For reverse problems (finding time for given angle), remember that most angles occur twice per hour. Time management: allocate maximum 2 minutes per clock problem; if calculation becomes complex, use elimination and educated guessing.
