Mental Ability — Revision Notes
⚡ 30-Second Revision
- Identify the target and constraints.
- Choose a table, diagram, equation or logical statement.
- Separate necessary from possible.
- Test rules against every supplied condition.
- Verify with substitution or a counterexample.
2-Minute Revision
Mental ability combines accurate translation with appropriate reasoning methods. Use a representation that exposes the structure of the task, preserve the stated constraints and avoid adding familiar assumptions. A plausible pattern is not automatically unique, and a possible conclusion is not necessarily required. Check the requested output before reporting the answer, then use a targeted verification to catch a representation or arithmetic error.
5-Minute Revision
Four people P, Q, R and S stand in a row. P is somewhere left of Q, and R is somewhere left of S. Must P stand left of R? The arrangements P-Q-R-S and R-S-P-Q both satisfy the conditions but reverse the P–R order. The proposed conclusion is therefore not necessary. Now add that Q is left of R: P-Q-R-S follows in relative order. Explain how the additional linking condition changes the available inference.
