Mauryan Architecture — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
For Prelims preparation, focus on memorizing specific facts: Ashokan pillar locations and their animal capitals (Sarnath-Lion, Rampurva-Bull, etc.), construction materials (Chunar sandstone), technical terms (Mauryan polish), chronology (3rd century BCE), and architectural types (monolithic pillars, rock-cut caves, stupas).
Create visual associations between monuments and their distinctive features. Practice elimination techniques by understanding common traps: confusing Mauryan with post-Mauryan features, mixing up cave locations (Barabar vs.
Ajanta), and incorrectly attributing foreign influences. Pay special attention to comparative questions that test knowledge of architectural evolution and regional variations.
