Ancient Indian Architecture — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
For Prelims, a strong factual base is paramount. Begin by creating a chronological timeline of major architectural periods: Indus Valley, Mauryan, Post-Mauryan (Sunga, Satavahana, Kushan), and Gupta. For each period, identify key characteristics, primary building materials, dominant religious influences, and representative monuments.
Focus on distinguishing features, such as the grid planning of Harappa, the polished stone of Mauryan pillars, the rock-cut chaityas and viharas of the Post-Mauryan era, and the freestanding temples of the Gupta period.
Memorize the definitions and functions of architectural elements like stupa, chaitya, vihara, shikhara, vimana, garbhagriha, and mandapa. Pay close attention to the differences between Nagara and Dravida styles, even in their nascent forms.
Utilize maps to locate important sites like Sanchi, Bharhut, Karle, Ajanta, Ellora, and Deogarh. Practice identifying common traps, such as confusing rock-cut with structural architecture or misattributing monuments to incorrect periods.
Regular revision of key facts, dates, and examples through flashcards and MCQs is crucial for retention.
