Updated 19 Oct 2026

⚡ 30-Second Revision

  • Sanctum tower: vimana; enclosure entrance: gopuram.
  • Cave, monolith and structural temple describe different construction processes.
  • c.1010: Thanjavur Brihadisvara, Rajaraja I.
  • Gangaikondacholapuram: Rajendra I; Darasuram: Rajaraja II.
  • Identify position and function before using height as evidence.

2-Minute Revision

A Dravidian complex must be read in plan as well as elevation. The sanctum and its tower differ from the enclosure gateway. Pallava monuments demonstrate several construction techniques; the Chola examples show monumental patronage and continuing ritual use. Later additions can change what dominates the visitor's view without changing the original shrine's identity.

5-Minute Revision

Sketch a rectangular enclosure, gateway, hall and sanctum. Label the two different towers. Then classify an excavated cave, a ratha carved from one mass and the Shore Temple by construction method. Finish by matching the three Chola patrons to their monuments and explaining one tempting wrong match.
