Definition
Indian painting traditions comprise diverse practices shaped by materials, patronage, regions and purposes, including manuscript illustration, court ateliers, devotional series and modern artistic movements.
A painting can communicate a narrative, record a courtly identity, visualise a poem or construct a national cultural argument. Labels such as Mughal, Deccani, Pahari and Bengal School identify useful historical contexts, but they do not make every work within a category identical.
Understanding a painting requires attention to how it was made, who supported it and how its figures, landscape, colour and composition organise meaning.
