Puranas — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
For Prelims, the strategy for Puranas must be focused on factual recall and conceptual clarity. Aspirants should prioritize understanding the 'Pancha Lakshana' (Sarga, Pratisarga, Vamsa, Manvantara, Vamsanucharita) as this is a recurring conceptual question.
Memorize the names of the 18 Mahapuranas and be able to broadly classify them into Vaishnava, Shaiva, and Brahma/Mixed categories. Focus on the key contributions or unique features of the most important Puranas, such as the Bhagavata Purana (Krishna's life, Bhakti), Vishnu Purana (systematic Vaishnava theology, genealogies), Matsya Purana (flood narrative, Vastu Shastra), Garuda Purana (life after death), Agni Purana (encyclopedic nature), and Markandeya Purana (Devi Mahatmya).
Pay attention to the authorship traditions (Vyasa, Suta, Romaharshana) and the general timeline of their composition (Gupta period significance). Questions often test direct knowledge of these facts or the ability to differentiate Puranas from other literary forms like Vedas or Epics.
Create flashcards for key Puranas and their distinguishing features. Vyyuha recommends using mnemonics, like 'PURANIC GEMS', to quickly recall the names and their core contributions, ensuring efficient factual retention under exam pressure.
