Prelims Strategy

Prepare short association tables that keep each component visible. For the Tamil devotional example, record Alvars–Vishnu–Divya Prabandham and Nayanars–Shiva–Tevaram or Tiruvacakam. A distractor may preserve two components while replacing the third, so recognising one familiar word is not enough.

Distinguish language from script before deciding whether a change is translation or transliteration. If the language remains the same and only its written representation changes, transliteration is the appropriate description. A new medium, such as a written transcript of a performance, is a separate issue.

Check the purpose of official lists. Sahitya Akademi’s 24-language coverage differs from the Eighth Schedule’s 22-language list and from a Census classification. Awards and programme inclusion do not establish the total number of literary traditions.

For source-based questions, ask whether the evidence is a poem, a religious biography, a recording or an institutional statement. Each can support a useful inference, but none should be expanded into a claim about the uniform beliefs or practices of an entire region.
