Sino-Tibetan Languages — Revision Notes

Updated 19 Oct 2026

⚡ 30-Second Revision

  • Census 2011 Statement 9: source-specific Tibeto-Burmese grouping.
  • Bodo, Manipuri, Garo: within that group.
  • Khasi: Austro-Asiatic; Assamese: Indo-Aryan.
  • Manipuri: 71st, 1992; Bodo: 92nd, 2003, effective 2004.
  • Region, script, ancestry and recognition are separate.

2-Minute Revision

A language-family classification concerns linguistic relationships. Census publication, constitutional inclusion and geographical distribution provide different kinds of information. The 66-language figure belongs to the 2011 Census paper’s Tibeto-Burmese category, not a worldwide inventory. Shared vocabulary may result from contact, while a shared script need not imply shared ancestry. Education and documentation must address actual community language use.

5-Minute Revision

Make a table for Bodo, Manipuri, Garo, Khasi and Assamese with family, Scheduled status and source. Then assess this inference: “Two neighbouring communities use one school script, so they speak languages from the same family.” Identify the missing evidence and propose what a school-language survey should investigate instead.

Vyyuha Quick Recall

Family, place, script, status: four separate questions.
