Brahmo Samaj — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
For Prelims preparation, focus on memorizing key dates (1828 founding, 1866 and 1878 splits), names (Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Debendranath Tagore, Keshab Chandra Sen), and publications (Sambad Kaumudi, Tattwabodhini Patrika).
Pay special attention to the Brahmo Marriage Act of 1872 and its significance as India's first civil marriage legislation. Practice distinguishing Brahmo Samaj from Arya Samaj - remember that Brahmo Samaj rejected Vedic authority while Arya Samaj embraced it.
Common traps include confusing the three factions (Adi Brahmo Samaj, Brahmo Samaj of India, Sadharan Brahmo Samaj) and their respective leaders. Use elimination techniques by remembering that Brahmo Samaj was always opposed to sati, idol worship, and caste discrimination from its inception.
Create mental associations: Roy-Sati abolition, Tagore-Tattwabodhini, Sen-splits. Practice timeline questions by remembering the sequence: founding (1828), Roy's death (1833), Tagore's leadership, first split (1866), second split (1878).
Focus on the movement's 'firsts' - first to oppose sati systematically, first civil marriage act, first to promote women's education extensively.
