Hindustani Music — Definition

Definition

Hindustani classical music is the northern Indian classical musical tradition organised around raga, tala, composition and improvisation. A raga provides a distinctive melodic framework, including characteristic movement and emphasis; a tala organises recurring musical time.

The performer develops a recognisable musical identity while making interpretive choices within those conventions. Vocal and instrumental forms share these foundations, although their techniques differ.

Hindustani music should not be defined merely as a list of notes or as music performed at one speed. Understanding how melody, rhythmic cycle and tempo interact is more useful than memorising isolated terms.
