Prelims Strategy
Make a term–function table: raga–melodic framework, tala–cycle, laya–tempo, sam–first beat, pakad–characteristic phrase and theka–percussion pattern. Test each pairing by using it in a sentence. A word that belongs to melody should not answer a question about rhythmic division merely because both appear in the same performance.
For numerical questions, distinguish matra count from elapsed time. If the question explicitly assumes one matra per beat, calculate duration as beats divided by beats per second. Doubling the specified tempo halves duration but leaves the tala's count unchanged. Do not extend this simplified exercise into a universal rule about every performance's subdivision.
Prepare Bhatkhande and Paluskar through their specific contributions and keep Lahore 1901 separate from Bombay 1908. A correct institutional name with the later branch's date can still be wrong.
Finally, use raga features together. Two frameworks may share a pitch collection yet differ in movement, emphasis or characteristic phrases; a bare ascending scale may therefore be insufficient for identification.
