Buddhist and Jain Festivals — Definition
Definition
Buddhist and Jain festivals are recurring religious observances that connect remembered events, ethical discipline and community participation. Some commemorate birth, enlightenment or liberation; others emphasise reflection, forgiveness and teaching.
Their meanings must be identified within the relevant tradition rather than inferred from a shared date or a general regional label. Vesak is associated with the Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and passing away, while Mahavir Jayanti marks Mahavira’s birth and Jain Diwali his final liberation.
Calendars and local forms vary. A temple ceremony at a particular site should therefore be distinguished from a broadly observed festival and from a modern event held on that occasion.
