Religious Festivals — Definition

Definition
Religious festivals are recurring occasions through which communities express worship, remembrance, service and shared meaning. They may involve sacred narratives, events in a teacher’s life, ritual calendars, pilgrimage or performance.
Their social significance also includes artistic work, community organisation and relationships across generations. A festival’s religious meaning, historical development and date of heritage recognition are different questions.
Study should therefore use named examples and recognise local variation, rather than treating an observance as a fixed set of practices followed identically by every participant or as a date detached from its calendar.
