Caste and Social Practices — UPSC Importance

UPSC Importance Analysis

Caste links cultural history with social justice, constitutional government and development. It helps explain why economic change may alter some practices while leaving other boundaries intact. A person entering a new occupation does not, by that fact alone, demonstrate the disappearance of marriage restrictions or unequal treatment.

For General Studies I, focus on social structure, reform and continuity amid change. For General Studies II, connect that account to equality provisions and affirmative-action design without substituting a list of Articles for social analysis. The two perspectives complement each other: constitutional rules establish obligations, while empirical evidence helps assess their realisation.

Prepare varna–jati, endogamy, reform and the difference between formal rights and actual access. These are conceptual study priorities, not an asserted question-frequency count. A credible answer avoids both timeless stereotypes and claims that modernisation has automatically ended caste. It identifies a particular mechanism, such as marriage networks or exclusion from resources, and explains what kind of institutional or social change could alter it.
