Woodwork — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
For Prelims, focus on factual accuracy and geographical mapping. Memorize the names of prominent woodworking centers (e.g., Saharanpur, Channapatna, Srinagar, Majuli) and their associated craft forms, unique techniques (e.
g., lacquering, walnut carving, inlay), and primary wood types (e.g., hale wood, walnut, teak, sheesham). Pay close attention to GI-tagged wooden products. Understand the basic objectives of government schemes related to handicrafts (e.
g., Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) programs, PMEGP) and their implementing ministries. Practice identifying correct and incorrect pairs in MCQs, as UPSC frequently tests knowledge of specific regional crafts and their locations.
Create flashcards for quick recall of facts. Cross-reference with maps to visualize the geographical distribution of these crafts. Be aware of recent current affairs related to new GI tags, export statistics (verify latest DGFT data), or major government initiatives, as these often form the basis of Prelims questions.
From a UPSC perspective, the critical examination angle here is to differentiate between similar crafts and correctly associate them with their specific regions and characteristics.
