Cotton Textiles — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
Trace cotton through ginning, spinning and fabric formation before considering decoration. Ginning removes the seed from fibre; spinning produces yarn. Weaving and knitting create fabric through different structures. This sequence resolves options that use a correct technical term for the wrong stage.
For English cotton count, write the unit before calculating: one Ne represents one 840-yard hank per pound. Multiply the count by 840 to find the corresponding length per pound. Since the mass is fixed, a greater length means a finer yarn. Do not confuse this indirect count with thread density or assume that it alone determines fabric strength and comfort.
Read product labels as separate claims. Cotton identifies fibre, handloom identifies weaving and khadi adds a hand-spinning requirement. Ikat or Jamdani identifies a patterning process, not necessarily a unique fibre. When an environmental option gives a universal water-use number or infers organic cultivation from natural fibre, look for the missing conditions rather than accepting the attractive wording.
