Textile Traditions — Definition

Definition

Textile traditions are bodies of knowledge through which communities turn fibres into yarn, cloth and decorated products. They include materials, tools, production sequences, designs and ways of teaching skills.

A textile can carry several descriptions at once: cotton identifies its fibre, handloom its weaving process and ikat the preparation of patterned yarn. These labels answer different questions. Understanding a tradition therefore requires following how the object is made, rather than relying on its appearance or regional name alone, and recognising the people whose work sustains it.
