South Indian Crafts — Definition

Definition
South Indian crafts comprise distinct traditions of making objects through specialised knowledge of materials, tools and design. They cannot be reduced to a single regional style. Channapatna's turned and lacquered wood, Aranmula's polished metal mirrors and Thanjavur's decorated painting panels illustrate different relationships between material and function.
Study each craft through its location, production operation and identifying feature. A regional name, religious use or attractive appearance may provide context, but identifying the technique requires evidence about how the object was made and which material performs its defining role.
