South Indian Crafts — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
Revise each craft using three linked entries: location, material and defining operation. For Channapatna, focus on wood turning and coloured lac rather than simply bright toys. For Aranmula, identify the reflecting metal itself, not the frame. For Thanjavur, connect the prepared panel with raised ornament and gold foil rather than relying on the deity depicted.
Use changes in a description to test understanding. If an Aranmula distractor replaces the reflecting metal with glass but retains a brass handle, the decisive feature has changed. If a painting is directly on a wall, do not assume that a temple association makes it the same as the panel example.
Keep chronology and certification separate. The 2005 GI certificate entry for Aranmula concerns recognition and does not date an individual mirror. Similarly, a craft label does not establish a toy's safety or a worker's wage. Match the evidence to the precise claim and avoid expanding a genuine association into an unsupported conclusion.
