UNESCO Tentative List sites are properties that countries have identified as potential candidates for World Heritage status but have not yet been formally nominated or inscribed. Think of the Tentative List as a 'waiting room' or 'pipeline' for World Heritage Sites.

When a country like India believes a site has Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) that merits global recognition and protection, it first places the site on its Tentative List. This is a mandatory first step before any formal nomination can be made to UNESCO.

India's Tentative List currently includes 52 sites ranging from ancient temples and archaeological complexes to natural landscapes and mixed heritage properties.
