For Prelims, the strategy for UNESCO World Heritage Sites must be multi-faceted, focusing on factual accuracy and conceptual clarity. Firstly, memorize the complete list of 40 Indian sites, their states, and inscription years.

Pay special attention to recent additions (Dholavira, Ramappa Temple, Santiniketan) and sites on the tentative list. Secondly, understand the ten criteria for inscription (i-x) and categorize them into cultural and natural.

Be able to identify which criteria a prominent site meets. Thirdly, focus on the type of site (cultural, natural, mixed) and its unique features (e.g., 'floating bricks' of Ramappa, water management of Dholavira).

Fourthly, map-based questions are common; practice locating these sites on a map. Fifthly, understand the key terms: OUV, Authenticity, Integrity, Buffer Zone, Tentative List, World Heritage Committee, ICOMOS, IUCN.
