Protected monuments in India are archaeological sites and structures safeguarded under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act 2010, administered by the Archaeological Survey of India.
These monuments are classified into centrally protected (3,693 monuments as of 2024, source: ASI) and state protected categories, with specific legal provisions governing prohibited and regulated activities around them.

The primary legislation governing centrally protected monuments is the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains (AMASR) Act, 1958, which was significantly amended in 2010. This Act empowers the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) – a premier organization under the Ministry of Culture – to identify, protect, conserve, and maintain monuments and sites of national importance.
The Act defines an 'ancient monument' as any structure, erection or monument, or any mound, tumulus, grave, cave, rock-sculpture, inscription or monolith which is of historical, archaeological or artistic interest and which has been in existence for not less than 100 years.
Similarly, 'archaeological site and remains' refers to any area which contains or is reasonably believed to contain ruins or relics of historical or archaeological importance which have been in existence for not less than 100 years.
Once a monument or site is declared 'protected,' it falls under the direct purview of the ASI or the respective State Archaeology Department. This protection extends beyond the physical structure to include a 'protected area' around it, which is further divided into 'prohibited areas' and 'regulated areas.
' Prohibited areas, extending 100 meters in all directions from the protected limits, are strictly no-construction zones, while regulated areas, extending another 200 meters beyond the prohibited area, permit construction only with prior permission and strict guidelines.
These zones are critical to safeguarding the monument's structural integrity, aesthetic setting, and potential for future archaeological exploration.
The concept of protected monuments is not merely about preventing damage; it encompasses active conservation, restoration, and scientific study.
